Indications
Metronidazole is indicated for the treatment of the following infections in adults and children:
- Infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium, Eubacterium, anaerobic cocci, and Gardnerella vaginalis, as well as infections caused by protozoa including Trichomonas, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Balantidium.
- Prevention of postoperative infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including Bacteroides and Streptococcus species.
- Trichomonas infections of the genitourinary system in both women and men.
- Bacterial vaginosis.
- Amoebiasis.
- Giardiasis (lambliasis).
- Combination treatment of peptic ulcer disease together with eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori.
Local official recommendations regarding the appropriate use of antibacterial medicines should be taken into consideration.
Dosage and Administration
The following dosages are generally recommended.
Prevention of Postoperative Infections Caused by Anaerobic Bacteria
Adults and adolescents over 12 years:
An initial single dose of 1000 mg, followed by 250 mg three times daily until the patient is prepared for surgery.
Children under 12 years:
A single dose of 20–30 mg/kg/day, administered 1–2 hours before surgery.
Newborns with a gestational age of less than 40 weeks:
A single dose of 10 mg/kg administered before surgery.
Infections Caused by Anaerobic Bacteria
Metronidazole may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antibacterial medicines. The treatment course usually does not exceed 7 days.
Adults and adolescents over 12 years:
250–500 mg three times daily.
Children older than 8 weeks to 12 years:
The usual dose is 20–30 mg/kg/day, administered either as a single daily dose or divided into doses of 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hours.
Depending on the severity of the infection, the daily dose may be increased to 40 mg/kg. The usual treatment duration is 7 days.
Infants up to 8 weeks of age:
The dose is 15 mg/kg/day, administered either as a single daily dose or divided into 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hours.
Newborns with a gestational age of less than 40 weeks:
Accumulation of metronidazole may occur during the first week of life. Therefore, during treatment, monitoring of the serum concentration of metronidazole should be performed over several days.

Storage Conditions
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C, protected from light and out of the reach of children.
